CLASS RESULTS & CRITIQUES

Thank you to the NNC for inviting me to judge their 30th Championship Show: having exhibited at their very first Championship Show it was an honour to be in the hot seat so very many years later.

A few general observations: whilst the number of exhibits being shown has declined over the last few years there are still some top-quality dogs in the ring, however currently females have the upper hand, and I was spoilt for choice in several classes. Of note was the number of promising puppies and youngsters in the Bitch classes which bodes well for the future.

As a working breed designed for swimming or hauling the breed needs a broad and deep chest with plenty of room for effective lung and heart function, I felt some exhibits were lacking this with narrow chests and lack of breadth throughout also leading to them moving close behind.

Mouths and eyes were excellent. There are some examples of dogs with quite extreme rear angulation creeping in which is not typical of the breed and can lead to weakness in the joints and needs to be watched.

As you would expect temperaments were excellent with no exceptions.

Dogs

Minor Puppy Dog (1,0)

1st - Mrs K Steels - Nurburgnewf Ironman: Brown of decent size at eight months is at a very rangy stage with head still to develop. Adequate bone, coat and eye of good colour, movement was a little erratic today and needs to strengthen in rear.

Puppy Dog (4,0)

1st - Ms J McDonald - Newfangled Frute Looney: Ten months of age and developing nicely with good size and substance. Attractive head with good breadth of skull, correct eye shape and ear set, his well-constructed hind quarters and angulation giving easy movement, super coat, just needs to strengthen in top line. Best Puppy Dog.

2nd - Miss C Boath - Newfangled Frute Bat: Smaller in type with promising head but would prefer a darker eye. Adequate bone for his size, well-shaped feet and strong pasterns. Took a while to settle but moved well when he did.

3rd - Mr G & Mrs P Leech - Aquatoriya Kelvin Y'Amiti Spirit:Much heavier in type than first two and still quite raw. Already has the makings of very masculine head with excellent dark eye. Good bone and feet, needs to strengthen in top line and rear. Super dense, profuse coat.

Res - Mr D & Mrs A Duff - Titanbears Vainglorious

Veteran Dog (2,0)

1st - Mrs W V Austin - Baranova Big Bopper of Elbear JW ShCM: Both dogs in this class are a credit to their owners. This dog presents a super profile, clean head of good proportions dark well shaped eye, deep in chest with adequate bone and well angulated hind quarters. This boy comes in to his own on the move as he covers the ground effortlessly maintaining a perfect top line, tail set and carriage and completely in tune with his handler. Shown in first class condition. Best Veteran In Show.

2nd - Mr R C Burton - Merrybear Freddie Mercury: Heavier built that impresses with size and substance, strong masculine head with good eye. Shown in excellent coat just lost his top line on the move today.

Special Veteran Dog (0,0)

Junior Dog (1,1)

Graduate Dog (4,1)

1st - Msn K Thompson - Comfortcove You Can Fly to Safeharbour: Not the biggest but attractive youngster who is undoubtedly male, lovely dark eye and correct ear set. Well-constructed shoulders with good reach of neck, level top line and good tail set, moved well in profile, just needs more furnishings to complete the picture.

2nd - Mr C Sayle - Gunnersnewfs Above And Beyond: Attractive head and giving the impression of strength throughout, good shoulder placement and spring of rib, correct rear angulation. Took a while to settle into his stride today and left his coat at home.

3rd - Mrs S L Wilson - Sparkybears Tiny Temper: Brown very much at the tall and rangy stage clearly enjoying his day out. Needs to grow into his frame, coat of good colour, unfortunately not looking sound in rear movement today.

Post Graduate Dog (6,1)

1st - Mr J & Mrs T Mycock - Zentaur Hot Diggity (AI): Won this class on overall balance. Masculine head of good proportions, he has correct angulation all through with a well-developed chest and broad and firm back, his sound construction and excellent muscle tone give him free and easy strides, shown in first class condition.

2nd - Mesdames K & E G Hietschold & Bone - Newfangled Playing Coy: Still to fully mature but developing nicely into a masculine frame, kind expression with good eye, plenty of bone for his size and well ribbed with strong hind quarters. He has a tendency to bounce, however moved soundly when eventually settled.

3rd - Ms S Blake - Sandbears Masterpiece: Smaller in type and still to mature, attractive head and lovely clean eye. Well-constructed front with perfectly straight and parallel forelegs and well-muscled shoulders. Covered the ground effortlessly. Unfortunately left every stitch of clothing at home today.

VHC - Mrs L & Mr T Chapman - Vodahond Prince Charming

Limit Dog (7,0)

1st - Mrs M Black - Gunnersnewfs Black Desire for Blackcoast: Very large framed dog, masculine head, almond shaped dark eyes give him benevolent expression. Excellent bone and well-shaped feet, good reach of neck and balanced front and rear angulation. Strong in top line with correctly shaped croup and tail set, well-muscled thighs he covered the ground with sound and effortless movement. Shown in absolute first-class condition. I think this boy still has some more maturing to do and with time will broaden throughout, however this does not detract from his worthy win today RCC.

2nd - Mrs H & Mrs E Hudson & Bone - Newfangled Bone Idle: Attractive head with tight dark eye, he has good reach of neck and depth of chest with well sprung ribs, correct top line, would just have liked to see him move with a bit more drive.

Beautiful straight coat in first class condition.

3rd - Ms S Blake - Ch Sandbears On The Money JW: A lot to like about this boy who excels in head quality, of good size, strong in neck and well angulated shoulders, level top line, with broad back and good spring of rib, correct tail set. Would prefer a little less hind angulation and sadly today his front movement was slightly erratic.
