Our 2011 Championship Show was held on 02nd April at Sutton Community Centre, St. Helens, Merseyside and attracted an entry of 137 for judge Mr. William Dobbin (Brooklynbear).

"At the start of the day it was dull, damp and wet but as the morning progressed the sun broke out and we had a lovely day for our Championship show. On arrival at the show venue exhibitors were already gathering, in anticipation for the doors to open. The atmosphere within the venue, as in previous years, was buzzing, and the happy good humoured camaraderie between exhibitors lasted throughout the day.

We opened the show by introducing our judge for the day, Mr. Willie Dobbin from the Brooklynbear kennel in Northern Ireland. Mr. Dobbin attracted a total of 137 entries which kept him busy throughout the day, and I hope that he enjoyed his judging appointment with us as much as we enjoyed his company.

I enjoyed chatting with numerous people who were enquiring about the breed and about welfare dogs. It was also pleasing that the Club gained numerous new members that had chosen to come and look around the show on the day. Once again it was good for the club that exhibitors and visitors alike commented on what an enjoyable day they had, and what an excellent show the club had presented.

Our secretary Jill Barker was as usual clicking away with her camera taking photos. Look out for them on the website and in the Club’s Newfletter. Another regular clicking away was Paul Dodd, so a vast amount of show and fun pictures were taken on the day. I know that the professional photographer Ian Raper was also kept busy taking pictures of our lovely exhibits.

Thank you to Royal Canin for their generous sponsorship and bags of dog food. I did witness some dogs trying to open their presented bags of food for winning their classes whilst still in the ring. Typical Newfies! Thanks also to the people who sponsored classes/sashes for the show which is greatly appreciated. These donations enable us to present superb quality rosettes which are appreciated by everyone. We do endeavour to give our exhibitors quality for money. It was nice to see stall holders present, doing a roaring trade and I do hope you all enjoyed your day with us too.

Welfare dogs on paradeJust prior to lunch the Club had a parade of three welfare dogs (Yogi, Dudley and Golly) with their new owners, who have given them a forever loving home. Each Newfie was presented with a bib, generously made and donated by Big Dog Shop, and a club rosette. Their stories make us realise that not all Newfies are fortunate enough to have loving homes and caring owners. The Club’s welfare stand made a total of £220 for welfare on the day. Thank you to all who contributed and especially to Sheena for her continued commitment and care for Newfoundlands in need.
Parade of welfare Newfoundlands at the Northern Newfoundland Club Championship Show, April 2011

The raffle was magnificent-there was a staggering array of wonderful prizes generously donated by members-food hampers, chocolates galore, wine, perfume, soft toys, jigsaws, dvds, books and many other goodies. We made £265 for Club funds.

To finish I would like to thank the show team for all their hard work in the run up to the show, and to everyone else on the committee and members who contributed to making this show a great success, laying out the show the night before and doing a multitude of jobs on the day. A big vote of thanks also to Susie Raymond for acting as Chief Steward, ably supported by Brian Woodhall. Thank you all our exhibitors, as without you we would not have such a happy, successful show. I do hope everyone enjoyed the day and we look forward to welcoming you to our open show in October."

Class Results & Critiques

As a judge and an exhibitor, I was greatly honoured to have been asked to judge the Northern Newfoundland Club Championship Show on Sat April 2nd 2011. On arrival I was made very welcome by the Club secretary who greeted me with a hot cup of coffee. This was greatly appreciated.

It was a privilege and pleasure to judge such beautiful Newfoundlands. I found the standard of dogs to be of excellent quality, my concern would be to improve better toplines in this breed, other than that I found all dogs to be clean and groomed to perfection.

Once again I would like to thank the Northern Newfoundland club for the excellent dinner and warm hospitality.

Willie Dobbin, Brooklynbear
