Judge: Mrs. Jan Groves (Bridgestone)

It is a great honour to be asked to judge our breed at a Club Show and I was highly delighted to be asked to judge the open show for The Northern Newfoundland Club. Many thanks to the officers and committee for extending me that honour.

I had the most wonderful day, with many fine exhibits being shown under me. Your hospitality was first class and the stewards did a terrific job keeping everyone including myself in order. Of course the real stars of the show were the wonderful dogs which all displayed the wonderful temperaments we have come to love so well.

CLASS RESULTS

Dogs

Minor Puppy Dog - No entries

Puppy Dog (4, 1 abs)

1st - Mrs. S. Blake's Sandbears Better Than Ever. 11 month black with an excellent well balanced profile. Good head, eye, muzzle and bite. Lovely length to neck flowing to a level topline and gently curving croup. A wide base to the tail of correct length. Super bone and feet on this youngster, who moved with great style keeping his shape. Well presented with a correct coat. A truly lovely young male who should finish well when matured. BPD & BPIS.
2nd - Mrs. S. Blake's Sandbears Black Caviar. Litter brother to 1, not quite the size or substance but has the same balanced profile. Good head, eye, muzzle and bite. Bone to fit size. Could not match his brother for movement. Had the better rear angulation over puppy 3.
3rd - Mr. B. & Mrs. A. Carr's Wanitopa Tidal Bore with Sauvtage. 10 month white and black with super markings. Not as refined in head but with a lovely dark eye, good muzzle and bite. Finer in bone all through. Moved well and was well presented.

Junior Dog (2, 0 abs)

1st - Mrs. S. Blake and Mrs. F. Riche's Deep Love Head Over Heels. At 15 months this youngster has everything to like and should go from strength to strength as he matures. At the moment he lacks width to back and body, but his lovely type cannot be ignored. Excellent in outline on the stack. Beautiful head, eye, muzzle and the best teeth of the day. Correct angulation, good width of chest, nicely fitting elbows level topline with lovely bone and feet. Out moved dog 2. An exciting prospect for the future.
2nd - Mrs. L. Harrison's Sandbears Eternal Flame. 13 month black. A bigger male than 1 and a very nice looking dog indeed. Good balance to outline. Typical head, with a nice eye and square muzzle, correct bite. Nicely angulated with lovely bone. Ok on the move.

Yearling Dog (3, 1 abs)

1st - Mrs. S. Blake and Mrs. F. Riche's Deep Love Head Over Heels. See Junior Dog.
2nd - Mrs. L. Harrison's Sandbears Eternal Flame. See Junior Dog.

Post Graduate Dog (3, 0 abs)

1st - Mrs. S. Blake and Mrs. F. Riche's Deep Love Head Over Heels. See Junior Dog.
2nd - Miss K. Lucas' Effortissmo Almost A Legend at Coltrana. Black approaching 3 yrs. A compact male with a good head and pleasing expression. Deep chest with good strong bone and moderate angles. Level topline with a strong loin. Won here on his movement and width of chest.
3rd - Mr. J. & Mrs. C. Lloyd's Cewrirdwr Llyn Llywelyn. 29 month black. At first glance I thought this boy would be my 2nd place dog as he is a lovely compact dog with the required width and depth ones expects from the breed. Super in profile, lovely head and such a sweet expression, mouth spoilt a little by lack of pigmentation. Good bone and very nice feet. Unfortunately he was narrow in chest and had an untidy narrow rear on the move.

Limit Dog (6, 0 abs)

Wow these first 3 males were cracking and could easily change places on another day. These boys had just what I was looking for, size, abundant substance, balance and movement.
1st - Mr. B. & Mrs. A. Carr's Wuzibears Promenade to Sauvtage, JW, ShCM. 23 month black. Impressive outline, large, masculine and well balanced. Broad in head with a dark eye, well placed ears and a broad square muzzle with large teeth. Excels in front angulation with substance lacking in so many these days. Large well shaped feet to front and rear. Depth and good width to chest. Level topline, correct croup, and wide base to tail reaching hock. Lovely turn of stifle. A joy to watch on the move, a steady smooth effortless stride. All topped off with a dense flat coat, which was perfectly groomed. This boy has so much to admire and like and I feel sure will do very well in the breed. BEST DOG, BEST BLACK DOG, BEST OPPOSITE SEX.
2nd - Mrs. A. C. Foster's Wilderland Golden Compass. 5 yr black. Another who impressed with his balanced outline and substance. Super broad head to this male with a soft yet masculine expression, a well shaped eye and correct muzzle and bite. Excelled in front angulation, bone, foot shape and size, depth and width to chest. Shorter in back with a level topline held well on the move. Really splitting hairs between these boys, just preferring 1 for overall size and presence. RES BEST DOG.
3rd - Mr. P. & Mrs. A. Patterson's Wilderland Amber Spyglass. 5 yr brown. The third in my gorgeous trio. Litter brother to 2. Again impressive substance and size, with the most gorgeous expression, a face I could kiss all day long! Masculine broad head, correct ear placement and broad square muzzle with good bite. Beautiful eye colour matching well with coat. Width and depth through body, great energetic mover who just lost out in topline. BEST BROWN DOG, BEST BROWN IN SHOW.
Res - Mrs. P. M. Byers & Mr. I. M. Smith's Solwaybay Telegram Sam.
VHC - Mr. S. & Mrs. D. Milburn's Dawstenbears Mr Gingles.

Open Dog (3, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. B. & Mrs. J. Woodhall's Bearhugs Falcon. 4 yr black. Mature male of great substance with a nicely balanced outline. Broad head with a kindly expression, dark eye, square muzzle and correct bite. Stacked he looks slightly lacking in neck but hands on it is strong and well muscled and of good length. Huge bone and well shaped feet, deep chest and good spring to rib. Excellent width to back, well ribbed with strong loin. Lovely muscle tone to rear. Moved with powerful quarters showing reach and drive. Well groomed. Strongly considered in the line up for top honours, just lacked that extra sparkle.
2nd - Mr. A. & Mrs. K. Farrar's Forgebear Eureka at Darkpeak. 4 yr black. On the stack this boy was my winner of this class. Large shorter coupled dog with excellent outline. Better length of neck and correctly shaped croup gave him the edge. Masculine head with good expression, nice eye shape, square muzzle, correct bite and ear set. Huge bone, well-shaped and sized feet, deep chest and level topline flowing to a well shaped rear. Couldn't match 1 on the move in the rear quarters. Well presented and handled.
3rd - Mrs. W. V. Austin's Sandbears True Grit of Elbear, JW ShCM. 5 yr black. Much smaller male than 1 and 2. Lovely type and balanced in outline. Good head, very sweet expression, dark eye, correct mouth. Bone to fit size. Everything in proportion, just wished there was more of him. Moved with style, excellent presentation and handling.

Veteran Dog (1, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. R. J. & Mrs. R. Evans' Cewrirdwr LLyn Arenig Fawr at Abbeydore. 7 yr black in tip top condition. Super size and substance all through. Good outline with level top line. Typical head with a nice shaped eye and strong muzzle. Deep chest of good width, lovely bone to well shaped feet. Topline and loin strong. Correct length to tail and in very good coat. Enjoying his day and strode out well. BEST VETERAN DOG, BEST VETERAN IN SHOW.

Special Veteran Dog - No Entries

Special Open Brown Dog (1, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. P. & Mrs. A. Patterson's Wilderland Amber Spyglass. See Limit Dog.

Special Open White & Black Landseer Dog (1, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. K. & Mrs. S. Walden and Miss J. A. Walden's. Ch. Wanitopa Cruising Along of Joalta. 3 yrs. Very broad head, pleasing expression, large square short muzzle. Correct bite and well placed small ear. Good length to neck flowing to level top line and gently curving croup. Deep in chest and had correct leg to chest and height ratios. For me he just needs to mature in fore chest and deepen in underline to perfect his outline. Lovely fore and aft angulation producing reach and drive in his movement. Beautiful classic markings with no ticking, in gleaming coat with enviable presentation. BEST WHITE & BLACK DOG.

Bitches

Minor Puppy Bitch (1, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. J. Archer's Teddyhawks Superstitious. 6 mth black. Delightful baby enjoying her 1st show. Balanced outline on the stack, with an excellent topline. Sweet head on the correct lines with a lovely dark eye and correct bite. Good width to back for a youngster and well fitting elbows. Bone developing nicely. Good angulation which carried her round the ring like a seasoned show girl. A very promising young lady. BEST BITCH PUPPY.

Puppy Bitch (3, 1 abs)

1st - Mrs. J. Cameron's Tremarcol Nania in Camnoire. 10 mth black. Another with a good outline on the stack, although slightly longer cast in back. Topline giving a little, which cost her best bitch puppy. A very feminine expression, with a correct pretty head, dark eye, bite and ear. Very good length to neck. Enough bone and correct shaped feet. Well-angled front and rear giving good ground covering movement. A flat, dense coat, presentation first class. At one with handler.
2nd - Mrs. R. Hutchinson and Mrs. J. Leicester-Hope's Wanitopa Tidal Wave. 10 mth white and black with a perfect blaze. Slightly shorter coupled than winner, but not the length of neck. Good head developing, not as sweet in expression as 1. Well boned with round feet, good over all make to body. Wider in front on the move, which needs to settle. Excellent presentation.

Junior Bitch (3, 1 abs)

1st - Mr. J. Archer's Buddies For Ever Littlelady Teddyhawks. 16 mth black. Very good type, so feminine in head, darkest eye, correct muzzle, bite and ear. So nice to go over, everything just flows from nose to tail. Broad in back, well fitting elbows, lovely bone and chest. Short coupled, gently curving croup and good turn of stifle. Moved with style and grace, had the better front movement of the two girls here. Shown in lovely dense jacket, well presented and handled. Should have a bright future. RESERVE BEST BITCH, RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.
2nd - Mr. B. & Mrs. J. Woodhall's Bearhugs Anya. 13 mth black. Giving away a little in maturity, but nothing in size. These two girls were both equally lovely but very different in type. Again superior flowing outline, with everything in body just right. Not as feminine in expression and gave way on front movement. Fantastic muscle on this young lady and carrying the correct amount of body weight. Another exciting prospect.

Yearling Bitch (3, 1 abs)

1st - Mr. S. & Mrs. K. Long's Bearhugs Astral. 13mth black. Litter sister to 2nd in previous class. Preferred body length and length of leg to 2. More masculine in head than I would prefer, but has a lovey dark eye, correct muzzle and bite. Lovely bone, well-shaped big feet and well angulated, with a deep chest. Short thick quality coat. Needs to tighten in rear on the move. Handler and dog at their first show, they now need to attend ring craft in order to get the best from this girl.
2nd - Mr. P. & Mrs. A. Patterson's Buddies For Ever Loveaffair at Wilderland. 20 mth black. Longer cast in back, with a very deep chest and shorter in leg than 1. Much heavier in head but has a pleasing expression. Very short square muzzle usually associated with the heavier head type and too much lip. Dark well placed eye, good ear and bite. Good bone, balanced angulation, level topline but longer in loin. Quality coat. Wide on the move coming toward, but tighter in the rear than 1.

Post Graduate Bitch (5, 1 abs)

1st - Mr. S. M. & Mrs. K. L. Heitschold's Chrishelkate Dark Krystal. 23 mth black. Compact flowing outline. Very feminine all through without being fine. Lovely head qualities, sweet in expression with a small dark eye. Nice reach to neck. Good body proportions all through. Level topline, broad back; bone to suit size, good turn of stifle. Shown in good coat. Strode out well, steady and straight. Well handled to get the best from her.
2nd - Mr. J. & Mrs. C. Lloyd's Cewrirdwr Llyn Goddionduon. 2½ yr black. Similar proportions to 1 but shorter in neck. I see they have the same sire. Good in head, with a sweet expression. Correct in muzzle, ear and bite. Well boned with round feet and deep in chest, broad in back with level topline. Moved very well, straight with good even stride. In good coat, well presented. These two could easily change places on another day.
3rd - Mrs. P. Lucas' Coltrana Incas Gold. 2½ yr brown. Liked this girl's size and substance. Strong in head but not over done, pleasing expression, would prefer a darker eye. Short and deep in muzzle with correct tight lip, good bite. Really well boned with beautiful deep tight cat like feet on the front and rear. Deep in chest and level in topline. Good angles. Lots to like, sadly very untidy and very close in rear movement, which cost her a higher place today.
Res - Mrs. W. V. Austin's Sandbears Three Two One at Elbear.

Limit Bitch (3, 1 abs)

1st - Mrs. P. M. Byers & Mr. I. M. Smith's Solwaybay Look At Me Now. 3 yr black. Good in profile, very nice length to height ratio. Correct broad head with sweet expression. Good length to neck, shoulder well set, well boned. Chest deep, well fitting elbows. Level topline and a nice turn to stifle. Shown in good coat, nicely groomed. Strode out well and had the better rear movement to win the class.
2nd - Mr. R. A. & Mrs. J. Cunliffe's Chrishelkate Cracklin Rose at Lillybears. 2½ yr black. Larger bitch than 1 with a very nice profile. Good head with a very sweet feminine expression. Good shoulder and excellent front, deep chest and very dense bone. Sadly her front didn’t match her rear in angulation or strength, and her rear movement let her down. Shown in super flat double coat.

Open Bitch (3, 2 abs)

1st - Mrs. S. Blake's Sandbears Got Attitude (TAF). 2 yr black. Stood alone but could not be denied. Lovely ratios on this girl. Excellent height to leg to body length – perfect! Lovely head, pretty with a melting expression. So pleasing to go over, her bodylines just flow. Good bone and well muscled. Nothing exaggerated about this girls angulation and she come to the fore on the move, she flowed around the ring displaying reach and drive, which was sadly lacking in many of the dogs here today. Her outline held on the move, head held high and tail carried at the correct level. When she fully matures in body she will be one to watch. BEST BITCH, BEST BLACK BITCH, BEST IN SHOW.

Veteran Bitch (3, 0 abs)

1st - Mrs. W. V. Austin's Newphrey Hot Jazz of Elbear. 7 yr black. Smallest in size and stature of the 3 ladies present but what a mover. Balanced in outline with bone to fit with her size. Pretty and feminine in head, good neck, shoulder and chest. Excellent topline and lovely rear angulation. A super veteran enjoying her time in the ring.
2nd - Mr. J. & Mrs. C. Lloyd's Cewrirdwr Llyn Gwynant. 7 yr black. Heaps of substance with good height to length ratio. Pleasing head and dark eye, shorter in neck than 1. Still holding topline well and has a well-made rear. Just giving away in rear movement to 1. Profuse coat, well groomed.
3rd - Mr. B. & Mrs. J. Woodhall's Bearhugs Kinder Scout. 7 yr black. Another girl with super size combined with substance. A little plainer in head, lovely eye and ear set. Less turn of stifle than 2. Moved well. This kennel must be complimented on turning out well-muscled dogs.

Special Veteran Bitch - No entries

Special Open Brown Bitch (2, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. S. & Mrs. D. Milburn's Sandbears Mocha Choca at Dawstenbears, JW. 21 mth. Very nice outline. Still has lots of maturing to do. Pretty girl with a good head, muzzle and bite. Lovely eye colour, matches coat well. Ears still a little large. Good angulation, bone fitting her size, level topline and a super rear. Moved with good attitude and even stride. Should mature well, shows lots of promise. Out moved 2 on the rear.
2nd - Mrs. P. Lucas' Coltrana Incas Gold. See Post Graduate Bitch

Special Open White & Black Landseer Bitch (2, 1 abs)

1st - Mr. I. & Mrs. R. Hutchinson's Wanitopa Bounty Bunkin. 3 yr. Mature looking, super for size and substance, great bone. Excellent markings with minimal ticking. Correct head with a kindly, gentle expression, darkest of eyes, small neat ear, correct muzzle and bite. Strong neck and fore chest. Broad in back, hard loin. Would like more turn in stifle, but this did not impact on her movement, which is strong and powerful. Very nice bitch who should take top honours. A strong contender in the final line up. BEST WHITE AND BLACK BITCH. Had more substance, fore chest and more fluid rear movement in the challenge against her litter brother to take BEST WHITE AND BLACK IN SHOW.

Dog or Bitch

Brace (1, 0 abs)

1st - Mr. J. & Mrs. C. LLoyd's brace. A mother and daughter well matched duo, looking similar, as you would expect. Moved around the ring as one, handler to be commended.
