CLASS RESULTS & CRITIQUES
Many thanks for the lovely entry and the Committee for the invitation to Judge at your show which was run parallel with the Newfoundland Club and the Judge was David Cavill later a Supreme Show was judged by Audrey Howells.
I have long had an interest in Newfoundlands back to the very early eighties when I first started out ,to show 1981 to be exact, when going to training for the first time I met this large heavy boned white and black newfie, later a Champion and being inquisitive I then had a very good teacher explain the finer points of a good Newfoundland.
Also later had the chance to be from the side lines involved with them from a well- known kennel and handler today, doubling up to shows , so often helped groom and handle too, when numbers were high so within that time I was lucky to be around several quality breed Champions owned by an array of Top Kennels.
Most of the exhibits were presented in clean and knot free conditions. A few sadly, a point I do not particularly favour or like, is over sculpturing. Newfoundlands do not need it, by all means tidy but not sculpt. Another concern I found was mouths and bites, there were few and far between correct bites which were set square to jaw, very often they were lacking in underjaw and seemed to be giving loose flews too. There was a considerable bone and size variance too within the head ratios and shapes (without the blow drying part), also on some top lines which became evident on the move, and tail sets and in turn their actual carriage, which is one main tool of the job they were bred for, rescue etc. as a strong rudder so loins should be firm, broad and strongly muscled back ends for swimming and not weak in thighs or hocks. This said there were some very good representatives of the breed today and thank you for some super natured dogs and bitches.

Thank you to the Secretaries and the Committees of both The Northern Newfoundland and The Newfoundland Clubs for giving me the honour of judging Grand Best in Show at your first joint venture.
Audrey Howell
Brace (2,0)
First of all my congratulations to the two very brave ladies who took part in the brace class.
1st - Baxter - Two blacks, very well matched pair, moved in harmony and went round the rings at a steady rate.
2nd - Franklin - Two blacks not as well matched in size as the first pair, but put their hearts and souls in to getting round that ring.
Grand Best in Show
Chapmans - Merrybear Dartagnan: Previously judged by David Cavill, BIS for The Newfoundland Club.
Large, 3 years old black dog in very good coat. Well boned throughout, level top line, good reach of neck, deep chest, good length of tail. Powerful legs with correctly shaped feet. Beautiful, mature head, benign expression, small dark eyes, correct dentition, deep muzzle, small well shaped ears. Moved out at a good pace with powerful, even action.
Grand Reserve Best in Show
Waldens - Jolata Strom Warning: Previously judged by Mrs Allyson King, BIS for The Northern Newfoundland Club.
Large, well developed Landseer, 2 years 7 months, another lovely specimen of the breed. Heavy bone, good depth and width of chest, level top line, well angulated and good length of tail. Typically shaped head, kind well shaped eyes and correct dentition. In good coat, and as usual, very well presented. Two beautiful dogs and a difficult decision to make, I just preferred the ease of movement from the black dog, they could easily change places on a different day.
Grand Best Puppy in Show
Lloyds - Excalibur’s Lady of the Lake of Newfoundland Hills (Imp Ita): Previously judged by Mrs Allyson King, BPIS for The Northern Newfoundland Club.
Gorgeous black puppy, nearly a year old. Beautifully shaped head with dark expressive eyes, soft expression, correct dentition, well placed ears. Good bone, well angulated and very good top line for one so young. Moved and shown to perfection.
