The NNC 2010 Championship Show was held on 03rd April at Sutton Community Centre, St. Helens, Merseyside and attracted an entry of 166 for judge Mr. Jim Bricknell (Bayside) from Canada.
“A big thank you to our Show Judge, Jim Bricknell (Bayside), who travelled all the way from Canada – I hope you enjoyed your time with us. Thanks too to the working newfoundlands who escorted Mr. Bricknell and our President Mrs. Peggy George into the ring, and then there is our super Show Team, Jill Barker, Rose Evans, Margaret Cox, Jacqui Woodhall who did a wonderful job. Many thanks also to the rest of the committee and all those who helped with the planning and on the day to make the show such a success and fun event.
We are very grateful to Skinners our main show sponsors and to all of those who provided class sponsorships, all the stall holders, the caterers who excelled again and to all involved outside of the committee including Paul Dodd who again did his best to photograph the class winners though not everyone came to get their pictures taken so we are missing a few this time.
We had a good selection of dogs and bitches for our judge to go over and very few absentees. Thank you to all those who entered, I do hope you enjoyed spending part of the easter weekend with us.
I must give a mention to the Welfare parade, pictured here, which brought tears to a number of people’s eyes. To see these dogs so happy and settled into loving new ‘forever’ homes is what Welfare is all about, thanks Sheena for your continued support.
Last but not least I would like to give a mention to the Special Veteran Dog and Bitches who entered our show, it was so nice to see these three dogs, two of which are over 9 years and one is over 10 years of age in the ring, what a credit to the breed.”

Class Results & Critiques
I will take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors for giving me the honour to judge their dogs. From the Newfoundlands I had to judge I will add a few comments that I seen with the dogs.
The winning dogs I had in each class can compete with Newfoundlands I have judged anywhere in the world. When I am judging Newfoundlands, I have a vision of what I want in an excellent quality Newfoundland. First impression can sometimes linger in your mind, when I see a good size dog enter the ring, head held high, very aware of where he/she is, full of confidence, straining on the lead, raring to go, I can’t wait to examine him. From the well developed head, proper ear set, to the dark eye, to that sweet expression, the strong, good length of neck for dignified head carriage, blending into proper shoulder layback to the dead level topline and proper tail set. When you see all this, the big test comes now in movement. I put big value on the dog that can put it , and keep it all together when moving. Watching a dog going away from you, driving in rear, showing the pads on his feet when moving, feet moving staight ahead, with little effort, you are looking at a very good rear. When he makes the turn to come back towards you, again I want the front coming staight to me, no turning out of elbows, slight toeing in, with good reach. The final test of movement is the side gait. The head should be held high, the topline remains solid, with good shoulder layback, he will have good reach in the front, and with good balance of angulation in front and rear, he will show the power in the rear. He will cover ground will little effort. A lot to aim for as a breeder.
There were many very good quality Newfoundlands, however, I found overall, too many loose, light eyes, which spoils the expression. Quite a few dogs were over weight, and the toplines showed it. The rear action on many were not up to par, be very careful with the rears on the dogs, a working Newfoundland must be very powerful in rear. Many of these problems can be corrected in as little as two generations, with careful breeding.
