Introduction to Marisa Jeffries

I first started showing dogs over 30 years ago. Our first dog was a Rottweiler called Kaiser. He was a beautiful big impressive dog, which mum bought for my Dad.  Then when Dad passed  away and we went to visit family in the states, that’s where me and mum first fell in love with the Newfoundland. When we arrived home the house was so empty that mum decided after losing Kaiser, (1 month to the day dad passed) it was time to welcome a Newfoundland into our home. Then a friend suggested we went to an open show with them,  they said it would be FUN. I was a bag of nerves, but Wellington won his class and after a few more shows, you could say we were hooked.  I can remember mum saying you’re a bag of nerves, why would you want to do it again! At one time we had six Newfies living at home, both black and white & black. I now have Saint Bernard’s, which I’ve had over 25 years. I have had a few champions, several of which were homebred and I give CCs in the breed.

I would like to thank the committee and the exhibitors for giving me this opportunity to judge this breed that still holds a big part of my heart. I hope you all enjoy your day and are looking forward to it, as much as I am.

“It was a honour and privilege to be asked to judge a breed that is very close to my heart. Everyone made us feel very welcome. I would like to thank everyone associated with the club for their hospitality and the lovely card and gifts received. The committee had obviously work very hard. There was a beautiful cake to celebrate the clubs 40th Anniversary. A big thank you must also go to my stewards who worked so hard to make my job a lot easier, Rose, Ed and Cath. All the exhibitors who entered under me, I felt everyone excepted my decisions professionally and with grace.

A few things I noticed since I was in the breed and I last judged, I personally feel that narrow fronts and gay tails are creeping in. Newfoundlands are built to be a draft dog, well balanced muscular and strong. Temperament was good. There are some lovely dogs out there, which the breed need going forward.”
